Coronation Community Orchard

The Green Canopy Scheme was set up to encourage community tree planting initiatives as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022. Levens Parish Council, as Sole Trustee of Levens Charity, successfully registered a plot of land owned by the Charity immediately to the south of the affordable homes to be built at Underhill.

On the back of this, Levens Parish Council had since been invited to apply for a grant of up to £15,000 from the Coronation Community Orchard Fund to establish a community orchard on the site. Success in securing funding was not guaranteed and would depend on the quality of the application - preparation of which was begun earlier this year. If successful, grant support would hope to include funding for boundary improvements, ground works and preparation, purchase and planting of trees, tree guards, irrigation systems and facilities for public access and enjoyment.

Update April 2024

In late April 2024, Levens Jubilee (Coronation) Orchard project was awarded £4,500 from the Westmorland & Furness, Coronation Community Orchard Fund.

Work towards leveling the site on Underhill next to the affordable homes plot and preparing for seeding, planting fruit trees with appropriate tree supports and guards should start quite soon.

The Parish project then needs to secure funds for perimeter walling, fencing and gates together with any benches, tables or features to help us all enjoy our new orchard.
